Years ago Cafe Provence was a special place to dine. They had good prices, large portions, and the food used to taste great. Now the place has changed. I went on a Sunday, and, including our table, there were only two others. I had the Seafood Fra Diavolo. Served with 2 shrimp and 2-3 other little pieces of seafood over an over-cooked linquine pasta. Fra Diavolo is supposed to be spicy. This wasn’t and the seafood wasn’t very good. No vegetables. The salad was perhaps the smallest portion I have ever seen in a restaurant, and the dessert was a Klondike ice cream bar still in the wrapper. Coffee was included, however tasted as though it was made yesterday. This dinner sold for $16.99. Based on the quality of the food and the portion provided, the cost should have been closer to $12.00. Another dinner with us had their veal cutlet parmigiano. Served with two very large and very thin breaded pieces of veal, with very little cheese and still less tomato sauce. Good thing about this dish is that it came with a couple of steamed vegetables. And for the same price of $16.99.
Cafe Provence looks like one of those restaurants that are a few months away from closing. The shopping center where it is looks like a deserted town … lots of empty buildings, closed retail stores, vagrants sleeping in makeshift beds on sidewalks, and patrol cars circling around. Apparently all the other restaurants in the area have closed.
Too bad … just a few years ago, this place was good.
