My name is Glenn. For many many years, as a foodie, I’ve enjoyed cooking, eating, fine wines and great dining. I’ve always felt that going out for dinner was special, and therefore enjoy good service, food quality and feeling special when dining out. Finding the right restaurant has always been a challenge. Relying on food and restaurant reviewers and critics has more often than not resulted in horrible dining experiences. Too often, food and restaurant critics provide reviews in exchange for advertising fees, consulting or writing fees; and therefore their reviews are tainted by making money rather than based on the quality of the restaurant or the food.
In 2006, I became a food and restaurant critic for Yahoo Dining. My reviews are published here, at Yahoo Dining and several other online publishers including Zagat and Menuism. I’m an independent critic, and I’m not paid to review a restaurant. As a matter of fact, I insist on paying the tab for dining out. Whereas paid critics need to write good things to get paid and/or get their meal comp’d. I usually try to sample everything the waiter or waitress suggests is good. After dining, I anxiously begin to write my review. If the food is good, I’ll write that the food is good; however if the food is terrible, I’ll write that as well. If the service stinks, you’ll hear about it from me.
As an accomplished culinary expert and chef, you’ll hear first hand an honest account of a restaurant, its quality of food, service, hospitality and whether or not you feel special when dining at the restaurant.
Ratings. We use a star system for ratings. Each rating is comprised of 3 elements … value, service and food quality. So if the food is great, but the service is crappy, a restaurant could get a lower than expected rating. 1 Star is poor, go somewhere else. 2 Stars is fair, perhaps they didn’t have a good day. 3 Stars is good. 4 Stars is better than good. 5 Stars is outstanding.
Some ratings are based on 5 stars, and others on 6 stars. Here’s why:
Considered 2.5 out of 5. Due to limitations of the star rating system, it is expressed as 3 out of 6 stars, which is the same as 50%. | |
Considered 2 out of 5, which is 40%, a rating less than the example above. |
As a general rule, I like to give a restaurant a few months before reviewing them, however from time-to-time, I’ll review a restaurant earlier, then usually return to improve the score/rating.
